Adult congenital heart disease (ACHD)
Our adult congenital heart disease service is well established at St. Bartholomew’s. The team is made up specialist anaesthetists, cardiac surgeons and cardiologists, along with other members of the wider MDT.
At Barts POM we provide perioperative care for adult patients with a wide range of congenital heart disease undergoing major cardiac surgery, structural and EP cardiology procedures, as well as diagnostic procedures, such as TOE.
Our ACHD patients often present with a range of congenital defects that may be newly diagnosed, or previously surgically corrected in childhood and still requiring lifelong care due to residual issues.
The anaesthesia team at Barts are highly skilled in managing the intricacies of ACHD, where patients can have arrhythmias, residual shunts, pulmonary hypertension, or valvular issues that complicate anaesthetic management. Each case is approached with meticulous attention to detail, with anaesthetic techniques tailored to the individual’s unique cardiac anatomy and physiology.
