Stage 2 training in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia
We offer training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia designed to meet the competencies set out by the Stage 2 2021 RCOA curriculum.
This comprises of training in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine for a range of cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery and cardiology procedures, as well as time spent on the cardiac intensive care unit. NHS England resident doctors from both North Central and North East rotations of the London School of Anaesthesia typically spend 3 months at St. Bartholomew’s in either ST4 or ST5. Stage 3 Anaesthesia training - Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia SIAs
We offer both 6 and 12 month SIAs in cardiac and thoracic anaesthesia. These rotations are for stage 3 trainees in North London rotations from the London School of Anaesthesia. An SIA at Barts POM is most suited to the trainee aspiring to a career in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, but is also open to those who wish to gain more experience managing patients with complex cardiac and respiratory disease.
This SIA provides experience in the anaesthesia for routine and complex cardiac cases, a wide range of thoracic surgery, urgent and elective cardiology procedures, as well as exposure to ECMO services and critical care. Developing skills in TOE and working towards accreditation is also a key part of the role, alongside a wide range of non-clinical activities.

Senior Fellowships in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia
Our senior anaesthetic fellowships at Barts POM are well established and open to applications from anaesthetists who have completed their training programme or those entering the latter years of their training (e.g. ST6 or ST7). Duration of these fellowships generally varies from 6 to 12 months with applications advertised via the NHS jobs website.
As as senior fellow you can expect to gain experience in the anaesthesia for routine and complex cardiac cases, complex aortovascular surgery, a wide range of thoracic surgery, urgent and elective cardiology procedures, as well as exposure to ECMO services and critical care. Developing skills in TOE and working towards accreditation is also expected, alongside involvement in a wide range of non-clinical activities.
Intensive Care Medicine training
At St. Barts we offer stand-alone fellow, alternative accreditation pathway and formal faculty of intensive care medicine (FICM) UK training scheme posts in intensive care medicine (ICM). Time is spent between our medical intensive care unit and cardiothoracic surgical intensive care units to gain a breath of experience whilst training with us. Additionally, we also provide general intensive care training for doctors on the internal medicine training scheme.
Those training with us will gain valuable experience in the care of patients following both elective and emergency cardiothoracic surgery or interventional cardiology procedures, which includes patients undergoing primary PCI and other interventions in our busy heart attack centre. We also look after patients with complex cardiology conditions, including adult congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathies, respiratory and haematology patients, as well as other acute admissions and ECMO referrals.
The Barts Health ECMO service is one of seven national services that support patients with severe acute lung failure, serving patients and referrers across north-east London. We also provide ECMO for patients with severe acute heart failure, operating both on-site ECMO cannulation as well as a retrieval service.

Junior Clinical Fellows & Middle grade roles
We offer both junior and middle grade fellowships at St. Barts POM. Our junior clinical fellowships are based mainly on the cardiac intensive care and high dependency unit. This role is suitable for those yet to have any formal anaesthetic or intensive care speciality training.
The middle grade anaesthetic fellowship programme includes time spent in anaesthesia for cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology procedures, as well as on the cardiac intensive care unit. This is a similar role to the stage 2 training we offer, sharing the same rota and on-call commitment. Please see this section for some more information.
