Perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography at St. Barts

At St. Barts POM we provide a well established transoesphageal echocardiography (TOE) service for patients at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. This includes intraoperative TOE for those undergoing cardiac surgery or cardiology procedures, critical care TOE and planned scans under sedation or general anaesthesia.

Our department has a wealth of experience performing TOE in these settings, with indications ranging from adult congenital heart disease to minimally invasive valve repair.

We also provide comprehensive training in TOE for senior fellows with the aim of formal accreditation. A rolling teaching programme supports this, in addition to supervised scanning, simulator use and other educational resources on site. Fellows receive a named supervisor, protected time to develop skills in TOE and undergo critical appraisal of scans at departmental meetings.
