The Department of Perioperative Medicine at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital provides comprehensive, high-quality care for a diverse range of surgical and medical patients. Our multidisciplinary team works closely with colleagues across Barts Health NHS Trust and with partner hospitals throughout London to deliver safe, evidence-based, and patient-centred perioperative care.
Cardiac Surgery:Anaesthesia and perioperative care for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), complex and routine valve surgery, and minimally invasive or robotic-assisted cardiac procedures.
Adult Congenital Heart Services: Specialist anaesthesia for adult congenital cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology.
Aortovascular Surgery: A high-volume programme managing acute aortic dissection, thoracic aortic, and thoracoabdominal aortic surgery.
Thoracic Surgery:Robotic, video-assisted (VATS), and open pulmonary resections, along with mediastinal and advanced bronchoscopic procedures.
Cardiology Procedures:Anaesthetic support for elective and emergency interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and structural heart interventions.
Preoperative Assessment: A dedicated high-risk and specialist pre-assessment service for optimising patients before surgery.
Critical Care: Intensive care for cardiothoracic, general, endocrine, and breast surgical patients, as well as medical ICU support for cardiology, haematology, oncology, and other specialties.
Mechanical Circulatory Support / ECMO: A commissioned centre for VV ECMO, also providing VA ECMO, ECPR, and perioperative mechanical support for surgical patients.
Pain Services: A multidisciplinary pain team delivering complex perioperative pain management and a transitional pain service linking inpatient care with community follow-up.
Advanced Imaging: Perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) for diagnosis, monitoring, and intraoperative optimisation.
A comprehensive aortovascular service managing acute type A dissections, thoracoabdominal aneurysms, and other complex aortic disease.
