The Aortovascular Anaesthesia and Critical Care Service at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, part of the Department of Perioperative Medicine, is dedicated to providing advanced perioperative care for patients undergoing complex aortic and vascular surgery.
As one of the leading centres for aortovascular surgery in the UK, we deliver perioperative care for a wide range of procedures, including open thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic repairs, endovascular and hybrid aortic interventions.
We provide comprehensive perioperative care from the complex aortovascular pre-assessment clinic to intraoperative management and postoperative care in our specialised Aortovascular ICU.
Our team of consultant anaesthetists and intensivists have expertise in aortovascular anaesthesia, left-heart bypass management, spinal cord protection strategies—including spinal drainage—and perioperative organ protection.
We integrate advanced haemodynamic and neurological monitoring, including transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and patient blood management techniques, to optimise patient outcomes.
We work closely with cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons, intensivists, perfusionists, neurophysiologists, specialist nursing and therapy teams to provide a multidisciplinary, patient-centred approach, ensuring the highest standards of care for high-risk surgical patients. The service is also actively engaged in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and training the next generation of clinicians in aortovascular perioperative management.
