The procedures we regularly provide anaesthetic support for include:

Structural Interventions

Mitral, aortic, and congenital procedures, supported by perioperative echocardiography.

Electrophysiology

Complex ablation techniques, including pulsed-field AF ablation, and device implantations such as subcutaneous ICDs.

Interventional Cardiology

Percutaneous coronary interventions, septal ablations, and other advanced catheter-based techniques.

ECMO & Mechanical Circulatory Support

VV and VA ECMO insertions, as well as balloon pump or Impella use for critically ill patients.

We run up to three general anaesthesia lists daily, regularly anaesthetising patients with severe cardiac disease for short stay or day-case procedures. There are also opportunities to be involved in the pre-assessment and multidisciplinary planning of these complex patients.

We are passionate about training the next generation of anaesthetists in cardiology and cath lab anaesthesia. Anaesthetists training at Barts POM receive structured teaching, practical supervision, and the opportunity to develop expertise in perioperative echocardiography, ECMO, and advanced procedural sedation. We also run dedicated training days covering anaesthesia for interventional cardiology and mechanical circulatory support, incorporating simulation and hands-on scanning practice.
