Thoracic surgery at Barts
At Barts perioperative medicine we work closely with our thoracic surgical colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to form Barts Thorax Centre.
As a service we provide comprehensive perioperative care to patients undergoing a wide range of thoracic surgical interventions. These can range from day case bronchoscopic procedures to open or robotic thoracic surgery.
At Barts we have a busy thoracic surgical service, regularly running two dedicated thoracic theatres on most days. We are one of the largest robotic thoracic surgical centres in the country, with 2 dedicated robots, and have the biggest robotic assisted lung segmentectomy series in the UK.
Our bronchoscopic service is also well established and leading in both navigational bronchoscopies and robotic navigational bronchoscopies. We operate a considerable lung volume reduction service and provide a tertiary thoracic surgical referral service for many hospitals in the region.
Our involvement in the perioperative care of thoracic patients encompasses the whole surgical journey, and is not limited to the intraoperative anaesthetic care alone. We run a high risk assessment service for the pre-assessment of more complex thoracic patients, and have a well established enhanced recovery service for postoperative care.
We are also heavily involved caring for thoracic patients who require either HDU or ICU support postoperatively. Our inpatient and transitional pain service is frequently involved in optimising the care of our thoracic patients as they recover from surgery, both in hospital and once discharged home.
